Health Tips

The knowledge on Tibetan medicine is to fulfill two main purposes. Firstly to treat the health problems by bringing the imbalanced state of Loong, Tripa and Baekan back to its balanced state with the help of various therapeutic means and proper dietary and lifestyle recommendations. Second purpose is to prevent any health problem from manifestation by maintaining the balance of the three principle biological functions of Loong, Tripa and Baekan by means of proper diet and lifestyle regimens in accordance with seasonal changes and individual body constitution. Diet, lifestyle and herbal medicines can be employed equally in both the cases of treating as well as preventing any health problems. When dealing with maintaining a good health, a natural life that is regulated according to individual body constitution is very important. Everybody wish to be healthy and doesn’t want to suffer any health problems. However, many of us lack proper health care knowledge and those who are aware often indulge in unwholesome means carelessly. Through this page, let us remind ourselves on some of the small yet important health tips that we come across in our day-to-day life.

1. Maintain regular habit: Maintaining regular habit involves all those activities that one perform each day right from getting out of the bed until one goes to the bed. Regular activities such as getting out of the bed, going for morning exercises or meditating, taking breakfast and then getting out for office or business work etc, should be performed right in time. If one performs them on a regular basis for a long period of time, it’s usually pretty easy to maintain the rhythm. The lightness of the body and mind enabling proper concentration, stable mind and stable digestion will enhance physical and mental power. However, once there is a break in the rhythm, it can be harder to start up again on. As such, maintaining regular habit is the basic factor for maintaining good health.

Well cooked foods with light oil and mild spices, warm foods, well prepared meat and vegetable soups, milk products with medium fats, light tea and light drinks should be taken. In addition, it is also important to eat right in time, avoiding eating in between the main meals. It is not a good healthy habit of eating a meal before the previous one is well digested. Drinking a glass of well boiled hot water after every meal is very helpful to assist in easy digestion. Keep the lower back and stomach always warm. Maintaining a stable and strong digestive system enhances immune system and hence prevents illness.

2. Maintain strong digestive system:

Concept of the digestive fire in Tibetan medicine which regulates and governs the whole digestive processes of breaking down, absorption and the final separation of the nutrients in the human body must be well maintained and enhanced. The strength of digestive system determines the physical strength of a person. Maintaining strong digestive system depends on how one eats and what one eats. Cold foods, cold drinks, heavy foods like oily and greasy foods, strong tea and coffee, high fat milk products, raw foods and vegetables, too sour things, too sweet things, excess intake of green leafy vegetables, modern fast foods and soft drinks should be avoided at all time. Eating out of accordance with one’s body constitution, habitually eating the same combination of food, overeating, excess drinking of cold things with meals, eating at irregular times and resisting the urge to eat are some of the common factors that weakens the digestive heat.

3. Good combination of diet: Good combination of diet mainly refers to a combined taste and quality of foods and drinks in order to maintain the balance of the functional principle of the mind and body. Our body is a composite of the quality and characteristics of all the Five Physical Elements and as such every taste and quality of foods and drinks is necessary to built up the whole structures, components and systems of the mind and body. Having more of one or two types of taste and quality of foods and drinks on regular basis will make specific organ or its components weak and unhealthy. Therefore, it is important to take small part from each taste and quality of foods and drinks.

4. Suppression of natural urges: In our day-to-day life, there are some actions dealing with the natural urges of our mind and body functions. These actions include hunger, thirst, vomiting, hiccough, breathing, sneezing, sleeping, coughing, spitting, defecation, urination, farting and ejaculation. These natural urges should not be suppressed under any condition. Suppression of the natural urges leads to aggravation of Loong disorder which in turn causes various blockages of body orifices and body channels in the subtle level.

5. Sleep: When the mind and the body get fatigued due to hard work, looseness and dullness occurs. Due to this, the whole body system including sense organs and important body functions loose strength to function normally. Hence mind ceases to operate relatively and the interaction with the surrounding stops for sometime.

Like food and drink, sleep is an important essential requirement for life and good health. During sound sleep, all the organs and functional components of the mind and body are put to rest, allowing them to fully recharge. When one misses previous night sleep, it is necessary to skip the breakfast and sleep comfortably for at least half the duration of the lost sleep. However, it is not healthy to sleep after a heavy lunch and during hot season. Those who wish to put off excess weight, should sleep less and avoid day time sleep.

6. Fasting: Fasting has been seen as one of the main means to cleanse the body systems of any toxics and impurities. People undertake different length of fasting to reduce body weight without taking proper medical instructions. It is very important to understand the physical strength and the individual body constitution before fasting is undertaken. Duration of fasting should be strictly in accordance with the physical condition and the individual body constitution. Loong type constitution with normal body condition should not fast more than 1 day; Tripa type constitution with normal body condition can fast for 1-2 days and Baekan type constitution with normal body condition can observe fasting for a little longer period of time. In general, winter is more appropriate for fasting than spring and summer.

7. Food intake: How much to eat should be strictly in accordance with the strength of one’s digestive heat. Inappropriate food intake causes indigestion which ultimately leads to various metabolic disorders. In general, it is recommended to fill two quarters of stomach with foods, one quarter with drinks and leave one quarter for the free movement of Loong. One can eat more in case of light foods, but should limit the food intake in case of heavy and oily foods. Filling all the quarters of stomach with foods will block the movement of Loong, thus weakening the digestive fire and resulting in indigestion.

8. Boiled hot water: Drinking standard hot water on regular basis is one of the best health tips in Tibetan medicine. The standard boiled hot water mean different in different places and weather condition. The quality of water is heavy in high altitude regions with relatively cold weather whereas the water is much lighter in the low lying warmer regions. Heavy water needs to be boiled much more than light water. More the water is boiled on standard heat, more it becomes lighter and beneficial. Well boiled standard hot water generates digestive heat, helps in better digestion, treats Baekan related disorders, obstipation, breathing problems, influenza and keeps away infections and inflammation.

In case the meal has been fairly heavy, it is advisable to drink more hot water right after the meal. It is equally helpful to drink boiled hot water particularly before breakfast or after every meal. It can be taken anytime during the day. For those who experiences digestive problem after the meals, it is good to drink boiled hot water after the meals on regular basis.
