Treatment Methods

The fundamental concept of treatment in Tibetan medicine is to bring the imbalanced state of mind-body condition back to its balanced state. In doing so, Tibetan medicine practitioner is always aware that one has to offer holistic form of treatment keeping in view the nature of disorder, the mental and physical disposition of a patient, his social and environmental aspects. Prescription based on individual body constitution is necessary to treat the individual problem of an individual according to his or her individual body constitution. Now-a-days, the general trend of side effect fears and worries causes lot of emotional distress everywhere. Fortunately, Tibetan medicine is devoid of any such unwanted side effects and reactions of any kind. This is also one of the reason why Tibetan medicine is being preferred over any other kinds of treatment particularly for treating chronic forms of health problems.

Treatment involves recommendations on diet, lifestyle, prescribing medications and employing external therapies, if necessary. Depending on the nature and severity of the health condition, the first form of treatment begins with proper guidance on diet and lifestyle regulations. If the problem doesn’t improve, various forms of medicines are prescribed based on the nature of disorder and the body constitution of the patient. If the problem fails to respond positively to the medications, various kinds of mild and drastic therapies are employed as the means of last resort. However, it is not possible to have a Tibetan physician beside every patient for a regular need and as such dietary and lifestyle advices are given in addition to a medical prescription. If necessary, external therapy may be given at the same time for enhancing the general efficacy of the treatment.

Foods and drinks that we usually use contain two main natural aspects. They are:
1. Taste.
2. Inherent quality.
Depending on what taste and quality of a food and drink has, will determine what kind of positive or negative influence will it give to a particular health condition. For example, sweet taste which is a combination of element Earth and Water, is beneficial against any kind of Loong disorders. However, based on its natural quality, sugar can be harmful to Loong disorders on account of its cooling effect. Honey although should be harmful to Baekan because of its sweet taste, however, it is beneficial to Baekan on account of its warming quality.

Generally speaking, dietary recommendation are based on permutation and combinations of an imbalanced state of Loong, Tripa, Baekan and the taste and natural quality of a food or drink. Loong being generally characterized with an aggravated lightness, roughness and coldness should be treated with an opposite quality against it. Heavy, warm and oily foods and drinks such as ghee, lamb, meat soups, bone soups, molasses, mild spices, sesame oil, milk products, well cooked foods and vegetables such as carrots, green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, zucchini, asparagus and beets with little amount of oil, preferably ghee and mild spices preferably turmeric, nutmeg, coriander, black pepper, cumin and dried ginger should be used for Loong disorders where as pork, caffeine as in coffee, lentils like beans, excess salad dressed with oil and cream, cold foods, cold drinks, raw foods, black tea and any foods devoid of any nutrients tends to aggravate more Loong. Foods and drinks with predominantly sweet, sour and salty taste should be taken and avoid more bitter and hot taste simultaneously. Drinking well boiled hot water after every meals helps to balance Loong disorders. Modern fast foods and soft drinks are devoid of any nutrients and hence aggravates Loong disorders

Similarly for Tripa disorders, oily, hot, light food and drinks such as heating spices, strong alcohol, meat such as meat of yak or Dri, lamb chicken, duck, dairy products with high fats content, eggs and greasy or fried foods aggravates Tripa disorders. Foods and drinks with sweet taste and cool quality such as fresh ghee, beef, ice cream, water melon, rice, sweet potato, fresh meat and fresh diary products of goat and cow, green leafy vegetables such as asparagus, bitter green vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, brussel sprout, bitter gourd, zucchini, celery, cucumber, fresh and sweet fruits, white sugar etc. are helpful to balance an increased Tripa. Foods and drinks with predominantly sweet, bitter and astringent taste should be taken where as salty, hot and sour tastes should be avoided. Choose mild warming spices such as turmeric, cumin, coriander, cardamom and fennel. Drinking pre-boiled cold water is very helpful.

In case of Baekan disorders, oily, cool, heavy quality and sweet taste are harmful such as high fats milk products, using too much oil in cooking, white sugar, watermelon, beef, rice, ice cream, sweet potato, nuts, raw tomato, cold foods, cold drinks, raw food, heavy use of salad, oily and greasy foods etc. Foods and drinks with heating quality, warm, light and hot foods and drinks such as well cooked foods with moderate spices with moderate ghee, well prepared vegetable and bean soups with moderate spices, honey, boiled milk, well boiled hot water etc. are helpful for treating Baekan disorders. Foods and drinks having predominantly hot, sour and astringent taste should be taken whereas sweet and bitter taste should be avoided.

It is important to follow dietary recommendations given by the physician in addition to the medical prescription in order to experience far better effect of the prescription.

In order to modify the lifestyle of a person suffering from Loong disorder, it is important to keep warm and to be with loved ones and friends. Moments of laughter is very helpful in case a person is upset and nervous as it relieves one from stress and nervousness. Looking out from a point at a long distance having good and wide view helps a person to be more open-minded and positive. Person under Loong disorder should avoid being under a fan or being in a place where there is strong presence of wind, or being in a crowded place with lots of noises. Loong disorder is mainly connected with mental condition and as such any factor that disturbs the mental state of a person should be avoided at all the time and at the same time, look for a peaceful, calm and comfortable condition. For Tripa disorder, it is very important to keep away from heat and disturbances. Look for such a place where there is coolness and is comfortable to stay. Avoid daytime sleep and undertaking hard physical work and exercise under hot sun. In case of Baekan disorder, one must keep away from all the cold conditions such as being in cold water, being on wet and cold place and being involved in sedentary lifestyle. Frequent exercises, walking, jogging, sports and keeping warm are very helpful. That will put more flexibility in the joints and help with clearing away the mucus in the body.

It is important to note that the above mentioned dietary and lifestyle recommendations are meant to be employed against each individual aggravated condition of Loong, Tripa and Baekan. However, against the combination of two or more disorders, one has to know how best one should adjust one’s diet and lifestyle conditions based on the nature of the disorder and on individual body constitution.

One of the main factor that promotes the development of the Tibetan medicine in the world is the utilization of its effective herbal medicine in the form of prescription. Depending on individual body constitution, the response to the effect of Tibetan medicine is different for different person. Generally, in case of chronic problem, longer duration of treatment is needed. This means, in Tibetan medicine there will be no common prescription for all for a same problem.

However, now-a-days, it is customary to use various therapies in addition with other therapeutic methods simultaneously. Generally, use of therapy in Tibetan medicine can be grouped into two: minor and drastic therapy. Minor therapy includes massage, compress, medicinal bath, cupping and mild heating with heated oil. More drastic therapy include blood-letting, moxibustion, cupping with blood extraction, cauterization, golden needle therapy.
